So you want to be a programmer?
A Technocamps Workshop for Year 10 pupils

Time: 9.00am - 3.00pm
Venue: Swansea University
Speaker: Fernando Loizides

From Microsoft Windows, to popular games like "World of Warcraft", to spaceship controls - none of these would be possible without the behind the scenes magic of programming. In this session we will be looking at programmes that we use every day, either consciously or without even realising it, and explaining how creating software is not necessarily rocket science.

Beginning with an introduction to the world around us and a presentation on gadgets and future technologies, the students will "catch a glimpse" of the future and be inspired by the development of modern technologies. As we share ideas and thoughts about what programming is and what programmes we would like to be writing, we will be exploring the world of programming by creating an application together.

The students will then be taken step by step through the process of creating a simple yet amusing programme themselves, customised to each group or individual and get to keep a copy of it on CD to show their friends. Furthermore students will get to programme and interact with a robot. More information about how to get more into programming and help will be given should anyone wish to continue any of the tasks further, or as a hobby.

This event is supported by Careers Wales, and the department of Computer Science at Swansea University.
